The Blue Devil varsity girls’ tennis team won the Suffolk League II title and is headed to the county playoffs.

“I think we have improved immensely this season and will continue to grow as a team,” sophomore Cameron Fehrs said.

Coached by Jamie Fishlow, the Huntington team began practicing on August 22 and less than two weeks later started winning matches against a string of opponents.

“I think Coach Fishlow was very surprised by the outcome of the season because I remember him saying, ‘We don’t have any star players, just star personalities,’” Fehrs said.

The Blue Devils completed their League II schedule with a 10-0 record and boast an 11-1 mark overall.

“I have made such a strong bond with all the girls on the team, especially the seniors,” Fehrs said. It will be so hard not seeing them next season. The seniors had made me feel unbelievably welcome for the past two seasons and I cannot thank them enough for not only that, but for contributing to so many fun times and so much laughter.”

Seniors Abigail Bellistri, Jessica Cordes, Leanne Daly, Gabriella DeLuca, Theresa Moreno, Miranda Nykolyn and Emma Pipolo helped lift the Blue Devils to the league crown. Senior Kayla Ryan is Huntington’s invaluable team manager.

“It was an amazing feeling when we found out we were league champs,” Fehrs said. “To be part of an undefeated team is something I will never forget.”
