The Huntington High School football team is back on the field and in bigger numbers than in recent years. Practice kicks off early Monday morning. Varsity and junior varsity players will participate in conditioning drills and learning assignments specific to their respective offensive and defensive positions.
The Blue Devils are coming off a 5-4 season that saw them reach Suffolk post-season play last fall. In 92 seasons since 1924, the Huntington football team has compiled a record of 407-296-30 for a .576 winning percentage. Current head coach Steve Muller owns a mark of 114-74 (.606) over 20 campaigns.
This year’s team might surprise some of its opponents. It has several experienced new players on the roster. Some of the top returnees look to be Garrett Moya, Ryan Stieve, Clay Jamison, Andrew Callahan, Edward Daly, Nicholas Lanzisero, Donald Stewart, Kei Ron Byrams, Michael Harris, Jared Leake, Luke Eidle, Sam Bergman, Kyree Johnson, Taqwan Gooden-Hill, Max Schauder, Jose Veliz and Anthony McDonald. Last year’s top junior varsity players, Aaron McQueen and Jacob Williams are also in the varsity mix.
Johnson was named last year’s Outstanding Defensive Back while Moya won the Joe Lucey Coaches Award for his determined on field play and leadership qualities. Byrams was Huntington’s Rookie of the Year.
“We have one of the biggest turnouts in a long time,” Muller said. “We welcome anyone who has a commitment to working hard and improving each day. This program has a lot of tradition and we want everyone to understand that and give their best effort. These early season practices are important. Every time we step on the field it’s important.”
The Blue Devil varsity will participate in a multi-team scrimmage on August 27 at Veterans Park Complex in East Northport. Huntington opens the season on Friday, September 2 at Long Island champion Newfield at 6 p.m. The Blue Devils will travel to Suffolk Division II No. 1 seeded Half Hollow Hills West on Saturday, September 10 at 2 p.m.
